The Learning Lab Takes Shape

APB’s Learning Lab took up an entire floor of Building 2A in the Fusionopolis research complex, about 15 minutes northwest of the CBD.3 Yumi liked the building’s elegant curves, lush green spaces and proximity to the INSEAD4 Asia campus, where she had many friends and colleagues. Martin had made his expectations clear. “No digital lipstick, no theater, no phony baloney. I want the Lab to embody our transformation.”

4 INSEAD is a graduate business school with campuses in Europe (Fontainebleau, France), Asia (Singapore), and the Middle East (Abu Dhabi). ‘INSEAD’ was originally an acronym for the French “Institut Européen d’Administration des Affaires” or European Institute of Business Administration.

Oliver Chan accepted the Learning Lab Director position. Working with Elina Gosh, he began to develop a workspace that would reflect Martin’s vision. The Lab had floor to ceiling windows, and plants in abundance. There were no offices and few partitions. Worktables, laptops and whiteboards were everywhere. There was a little self-serve cafeteria, and a small, low stage to facilitate report outs. It felt a bit like a comedy club.

A central collaboration zone served as a mini-Lighthouse, providing an overview of what was happening at any given time. The Learning Lab’s mantra was prominently posted: Digital to the Core, as was APB’s winning logic:
